The review
What applause leaves behind.
The strainer holds the least glamorous portions of popcorn: amber hulls, broken seed coats, and salt made translucent by water. Beyond it, a single white kernel keeps its shape in the broad utility basin. The proportions are exact—aftermath below, encore above.
Because the intact kernel could have been retrieved, its presence feels deliberate. Sequence frames disagree. It falls from the rinsed bowl, bounces once, and stops there. Chance retains authorship.
What it says about the owner
The sink belongs to Larkspur Court's basement common room. Mara has invited three route-department colleagues, Tom, and the upstairs neighbor to watch a documentary projected onto the blank wall. It is the first gathering in the record with more chairs than the apartment owns.
At 12:18, everybody else carries borrowed chairs upstairs. Mara rinses the bowl and leaves the lone kernel until morning. The owner signal is indirect but clear: she is no longer the first person to leave her own invitations.
