The canonical sink snack, after midnight.
Here the definition is satisfied with unusual clarity. The metal basket holds distinct fragments rather than paste: two noodle lengths, scallion rings, sesame, chili, and a pale translucent sliver best identified as ginger. Each is recognizably edible; none was intended to survive the rinse.
The lone noodle loop outside the basket creates a pleasing tension. It is either an escapee or the final mouthful declined. Its clean circular shape gives the observation an afterimage far greater than its mass.
What it says about the owner
Mara repeats this meal seven times in October, always after midnight. The first three catches contain only noodle and scallion. Ginger begins on the fourth. Tom, her younger brother, always added ginger after turning off the heat; Mara used to complain that it made the broth taste medicinal.
Habit is often how one person continues to occupy another person's kitchen. At this point in the story, Mara has not called Tom in nearly five years.
