Cake-Crumb Weather

The review

A forecast written after dessert.

Chocolate crumbs fall unevenly across the fine mesh, dense at the lower edge and sparse near the rim. One pale raspberry seed supplies scale. In the basin, three fork tracks run across a small cake corner without removing it, the unmistakable record of somebody reconsidering the final bite.

The scene is a Conjunction with excellent meteorology: Catch as rainfall, Remainder as pressure system, pink enamel as an implausibly calm sky. The cake itself is modest enough to remain evidence rather than spectacle.

The candles were gone. The wish, Tom said, did not require witnesses.

What it says about the owner

The sink belongs to Inez, a friend who hosted Mara's thirty-ninth birthday on the condition that nobody call it a party. Tom brought the cake. Mara cut four pieces despite three chairs, then reduced the extra corner fork-line by fork-line while everyone discussed the coastal route.

At 10:06 she stopped saving a place for the person she had been five years earlier. The corner remained because fullness is sometimes the least interesting explanation and sometimes the truest.
