The review

A still life interrupted once.

The grape is whole enough to retain its shape and bitten deeply enough to expose a clean green crescent. A short vine hooks toward it from the left; the cheese crumb sits at a measured distance to the right. The empty strainer above refuses involvement.

This Remainder succeeds through restraint. It suggests the last reach toward a board already cleared, followed by the discovery that the fruit was softer than expected. Against deep green ceramic, the three pieces acquire the gravity of objects deliberately placed.

What it says about the owner

Four people have spent the evening at Mara's table, though only Aisha and Tom appear elsewhere in the record. The cheese is gone, the glasses are rinsed, and the final grape has been claimed after everyone leaves rather than saved from a politeness no guest requested.

Mara once treated the last piece of anything as an obligation to an absent person. The single bite is modest evidence that a kitchen can belong to whoever is still awake in it.
